What does a Carpenter do?
Carpentry is a varied and valuable trade in constant demand.
As a Carpenter, you’ll be constructing, installing, renovating and repairing all sorts of structures and fixtures, working with a variety of materials.
You will be working on many different types of worksites, which could be in the residential, commercial or industrial sectors. Once you find which sector fits you, the possibilities are endless.

What will you learn as an apprentice?
An apprenticeship in Carpentry will teach you all about construction within the different sectors of the industry: Residential, Commercial and Industrial Carpentry.
Under the supervision of qualified tradespeople, you will also learn how to:
- Select and prepare timber and manufactured board for furniture
- Install completed or repaired fitted cabinets and components
- Read plans and other diagrams and choose and prepare timbers and other materials for layouts
- Use saws, chisels, planes, power tools and woodworking machines
- Assemble wood structures together and install joints, framing and cladding
- Repair existing structures
- Install completed or repaired structures
It generally takes four years to become a qualified Carpenter, but since the apprenticeship is based on competency, it can be completed earlier if you have achieved the required skills.

Where can your apprenticeship lead you?
There are many career pathways and options open to you once you complete your apprenticeship.
When undertaking a Carpenter apprenticeship you will study a Certificate III in Carpentry over four years.
You might want to gain further qualifications in your chosen field, or even undertake another trade.
Either way, an apprenticeship as a Carpenter is your ticket to a bright future.
Career Pathway
During your apprenticeship with 91¹ÙÍøyou will work towards attaining the Certificate III in Carpentry, upon completion of which you will be qualified to work as a Carpenter.
There are options to upskill with further study, which will enable you to pursue a variety of more advanced occupations within the trade once you obtain the necessary qualifications for a specific role;
These are some common examples of study pathways beyond your initial apprenticeship, but you are not limited to these options - there are so many possibilities!
*Certificate II refers to a nationally recognised qualification that prepares you for the workplace or academic studies. While it’s not required it may help you to prepare for a Certificate III.
