Hello everyone! I’m Hap Dan, and I’m thrilled to share my journey as a mentor at MEGT, where I've had the privilege of guiding aspiring professionals in Victoria for over a year.Ìý
My journey into mentoring was driven by my desire to support and inspire individuals as they pursue their career dreams. Reflecting on my own path, I realised how much I benefited from the advice and encouragement I received along the way. It feels incredibly rewarding to come full circle and now extend that same support to young people, helping them learn from both my triumphs and my mistakes. I believe mentoring is about providing direction and being a steadfast presence, especially for those just starting who may feel a bit lost.Ìý
Before joining MEGT, I explored diverse roles in sales, marketing, retail, and hospitality. The past 10-15 years were transformative as I transitioned into the education and employment services sector, moving from marketing to case management and vocational counselling. As a former Jobs Victoria Advocate, I worked with people from all backgrounds, assisting them on their employment and educational paths. I have a profound belief in the potential of young people. Remembering the lack of mentorship and resources I faced in my youth reminds me of how crucial it is to help others avoid similar obstacles.Ìý
My mentoring approach is not one-size-fits-all just as MEGT’s approach is more holistic rather than clinical. We recognise that each apprentice and trainee have unique experiences and needs. I begin by listening without judgment, creating an open space for them to share their stories, concerns, and aspirations. Understanding that every situation has multiple perspectives, I strive to address conflicts with compassion and patience. Drawing from my own upbringing in a supportive community, I aim to instil that same spirit of belonging for our apprentices. We are here to guide them through their challenges and help them articulate their feelings because it’s vital for them to feel heard and in control. As a mentor, I see myself as a collaborator, working alongside them to find solutions and empower them every step of the way.Ìý
If I could give one piece of advice to any apprentices out there who are feeling unsure about pursuing a career in the trades, it would be: your choices today don’t define your future. Life is filled with opportunities to change trajectories as your interests evolve. The key is to take that first step and not let insecurities hold you back. Not all paths will lead where you want, but the ones that do can be truly extraordinary.ÌýÌý
I believe mentoring is crucial because as human beings, it’s essential to have a strong support system. Knowing there’s someone you can turn to in times of trouble or uncertainty can make all the difference. We’re not just mentors at MEGT; we’re here to be your resource and a reliable source of encouragement as you navigate your journey ahead. A mentor who is accessible and genuinely has your best interests at heart can provide that invaluable sense of security, mental health happiness and well-being.Ìý
